The Town Council begins the clearance campaign in more than fifty watercourses and river and stream crossings to prevent flooding

The Town Council acts every year in urban areas under municipal responsibility to remove plant debris, reeds and rubbish that may have accumulated.

Estepona Town Council has begun the clearance campaign in more than fifty watercourses and stream and river crossings that run through urban areas of the city, with the aim of preventing flooding and fires.

Thanks to these interventions carried out by the Town Council each year, obstacles in river and stream channels that could prevent their normal drainage are removed. At the same time, the formation of blockages that could cause flooding in the event of heavy rainfall is avoided. The clearance of stream channels is also carried out with the intention of preventing forest fires that put residents and the municipality’s natural heritage at risk.

The work has begun and action has already been taken in Arroyo Pantoja and its tributary, moving on in the coming days to Arroyo el Taraje (upstream and downstream of Avenida de las Palmeras). In this area, the stretch downstream of the A-7 to the beach will be checked and gone over again. These will follow: Arroyo Judío and upper crossings of Camino la Alberdina, and downstream in the Playa del Padrón area; Hornacino de Levante; Hornacino de Poniente (downstream and upstream of Avenida del Carmen); Arroyo los Polvitos, at the junction with Camino Los Polvitos; Arroyo vaquero; Arroyo Enmedio; Arroyo La Galera; Río Padrón, in the Fuente Cursito, Huertas del Padrón and Charca la Extranjera areas; Río Guadalobón; Arroyo Cantarranas (on both sides of the overpass); Arroyo la Miel at its junction with the Casares road and in the area of the homes below the old landfill; Arroyo El Saladillo; Río La Cala; Arroyo Las Abejeras; Río Monterroso; Arroyo Dos Hermanas; several stretches of the Río Velerín Alto, under the motorway, and downstream of the A-7 (beach area at Torre Velerín); Arroyo Antón; Arroyo Las Cañas; and Cañada Ortega.

In addition, work will be carried out on some thirty river and stream crossings upstream and downstream within the municipal area. It is important to remember that the Town Council only has powers to act on channels located in urban areas, with the Junta de Andalucía responsible for the maintenance of those running through the rest of the municipal area.

This clearance and pruning work has resumed after the summer season, since the Junta de Andalucía urges that no action be taken on river and stream banks from spring and throughout the summer (March to July-August) in order to respect the nesting periods of protected species. For this reason, all the work being carried out has the required authorisations from the Consejería de Sostenibilidad y Medio Ambiente.

Once the clearance work by the Operational Brigades has been completed, the cleaning company will be responsible for removing any remaining urban solid waste in the work areas.
