The Town Council advances towards completing the coastal corridor and prepares the tender for the stretch between Guadalmina Baja and Casasola

The path is 95% complete and already connects more than 21 kilometres of coastline

Estepona Town Council is entering the final stretch of the major project begun more than a decade ago to create a corridor that allows people to walk the entire coastline of the municipality. In this regard, it is finalising the procedures for the remaining stretches to complete this great piece of infrastructure. In the case of the stretch between Guadalmina Baja and Casasola, the project and the relevant permits are already in place and in a few days the tender will open to contract the works.

The project at this point includes the construction of a paved path that will allow safe and accessible passage along the coastline, contributing to the recovery and conservation of the right of way within the maritime-terrestrial public domain. Specifically, this new stretch is located between the Río Guadalmina and the Hotel Atalaya Park, on the beach known as Casasola.

The solution adopted for this area consists of building a paved pedestrian path 673 metres long, with a constant clear width of 3 metres. For the paving, the use of stamped concrete is planned, a material that offers an aesthetic and functional solution suited to the conditions of the surroundings. This pedestrian walkway will connect the paths planned on both sides of the area of action, improving accessibility and the integration of the coastal area.

The Estepona coastal corridor is now 95% complete along its total route. In parallel, the Town Council is working on the projects for the remaining stretches to finish it. Specifically, the extension of the pedestrian path in the areas of Bahía Dorada, to the west; and in Atalaya, to the east. In the Isdabe Atalaya area, within stretch 15 of the municipal project, all the documentation has been submitted and the permits are awaited. As for the Costa Natura area, the project for the construction of the coastal corridor stretch is in the drafting phase.

The mayor, José María García Urbano, stresses the great value of this sustainable urban development initiative, which has meant preserving this coastal space and turning it into a new tourist attraction for the municipality. In this regard, he recalled that building a great pedestrian corridor connecting the whole of Estepona’s coastline is a project on which work began in 2011, being one of the strategic initiatives set at the start of his term as mayor.

To prepare the Estepona coastal corridor it has been necessary to install up to 17 large wooden bridges to cross the rivers and streams along the route. The result has been a significant enhancement of spaces that had been cut off and that can now be enjoyed by citizens for walking or sport.
