The Town Council will undertake the biggest renovation of the Orchid Botanical Park since it opened

The intervention planned for this space, established as one of the main tourist attractions of the municipality, includes everything from new planting to the remodelling of paving, paintwork, street furniture, pedestrian paths and new lighting.

Estepona Town Council is preparing what will be the biggest renovation of the Orchid Botanical Park since its creation, which has just reached its 10th anniversary. The intervention, aimed at improving the image and services of one of the main tourist attractions of the municipality, includes everything from new trees and botanical collection, to renewal of lighting, paving and street furniture.

The project the Town Council is already working on, and which will serve as the basis for the upcoming tender for the works, sets out a long list of planned actions that will focus on the park. Among them, the replacement with new tree and botanical species stands out. A strip of land in the southern area of the park, with a measured surface area of 2,300 square metres, will be completely restored. This action will be accompanied by the installation of signs at the foot of each specimen, so as to provide visitors with more recreational and scientific information about the collection housed in this public space.

The premise followed in this project, which will complement the regular maintenance carried out by the Town Council in this public space, is to keep the park’s current design while considerably improving its general condition. For this reason, all the paving will be completely replaced while maintaining the character of an ecological, permeable and stable material that guarantees improved pedestrian accessibility. Likewise, the street furniture will be changed for furniture more in keeping with the new line intended for the site.

The deputy mayor for External Control, Blas Ruzafa, explains that it is a “complete remodelling of the botanical park, where significant interventions will be carried out to get this public space into shape”.

Improvements to the irrigation system and a waterproofing paint treatment for all the exterior walls of the Orquidario building are planned, as well as the replacement of the glazed safety panels located on the access stairs to the Orquidario.

All of this will be accompanied by improvements to the lighting and street lighting that the Town Council will carry out in a parallel intervention to replace all the light fittings, ensuring lighting with more efficient LED equipment and avoiding noise pollution. Scenic lighting of the botanical specimens will be installed.

All the aforementioned actions will lead to a significant increase in its civic and safety dimension, improving the accessibility, biodiversity and cultural aspects of the Estepona Orchid Public Botanical Park.

Opened in March 2015, the Orchid Botanical Park has completed its first decade of life established as one of the main tourist attractions of Estepona. With more than 3,000 plant species, of which close to 1,500 are orchids, this municipal facility has the largest collection in Spain and one of the most important in Europe.
