Estepona’s Sea Museum is putting the finishing touches to its renovation

Estepona Town Council is finishing the refurbishment and improvement works at the Sea Museum, located in the Plaza de Toros, with the aim of strengthening the dissemination of the town’s maritime history and tradition.

The project adds three new display cases for part of the Miguel López Mateo Collection, new spaces for the largest pieces, and information panels on fishing, traditional boat-building, the canning industry, maritime traditions and protection of the marine environment.

The museum will also have new audiovisual content dedicated to the Alboran Sea and its biodiversity, traditional boat-building and the tradition of the Virgen del Carmen.

One of the main new features will be an immersive room dedicated to posidonia meadows, with screens and interactive resources to show visitors the importance of these ecosystems for biodiversity and the conservation of the Mediterranean.

The project represents an investment of €65,347.87, financed 70% by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) of the European Union and 30% by the Junta de Andalucía.

A project aimed at continuing to showcase Estepona’s historical, cultural and ethnographic heritage and to bring the town’s maritime identity closer to residents and visitors.
