José María García Urbano announces he will stand for re-election as Mayor of Estepona
The mayor of Estepona and local PP president, José María García Urbano, has announced that he will stand for re-election as Mayor of Estepona in the forthcoming municipal elections on 28 May.
García Urbano pointed out that the work done and the results obtained with the city model developed are the guarantee for continuing to build a future in the municipality. “Estepona has undergone a historic transformation and has achieved economic and social revitalisation in these 12 years of government. We have the backing of good management; we are going to continue working for Estepona, with the same dedication, to consolidate the development and well-being achieved and to keep making the city a benchmark in quality of life”, the Partido Popular leader assured.
He also recalled the management carried out to restore institutional seriousness, achieve the economic recovery of the Town Council with milestones such as reducing the inherited debt from 304 million euros to 50 million euros, and carry out the great transformation and modernisation of the city. “Estepona is at the head of the municipalities with the lowest unemployment in Andalucía, it has gained facilities such as the hospital, the theatre-auditorium, the fairground, the new sports facilities, the coastal corridor, the renovation and revitalisation of the whole town centre and the recovery of residents’ pride in the city”, stressed García Urbano, who thanked citizens for their empathy and involvement in this city project.
García Urbano first stood as a candidate in the municipal elections of 22 May 2011, becoming mayor after winning an absolute majority. In 2015, he renewed the absolute majority with 60% of the votes, becoming the most-voted mayor in Spain among municipalities of more than 50,000 inhabitants.
On 26 May 2019, he was again the most-voted mayor in Spain after improving the already ample absolute majority, winning 21 of the 25 councillors on the Corporation, with almost 70% of the votes.
