Success for the first edition of the Costa del Sol Gran Fondo, starting in Estepona and with the timed stage finishing at Peñas Blancas
The event, held on Saturday, consolidates the Costa del Sol as a benchmark for cycle tourism and shows the area’s commitment to sport and sustainability.
Estepona Town Council reports that the Costa del Sol Gran Fondo held its first edition last Saturday with great success, bringing together hundreds of cyclists who from first thing in the morning rode through some of the most spectacular landscapes in the south of Spain.
The day began at 8:00 am with the neutralised start from the centre of Estepona, accompanied by the mayor, José María García Urbano, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the value of the event for the sporting and tourist promotion of the municipality.
The peloton enjoyed an urban stretch through the city’s streets before tackling the demanding route through the Costa del Sol, Sierra Bermeja and the Genal Valley, with a timed finish at the legendary Alto de Peñas Blancas. The route was a true showcase of the area: mountain roads, white villages and landscapes that combine the toughness of the climbs with the beauty of the surroundings.

The involvement of the municipalities and the support of residents has been key to the success of this first edition, consolidating the spirit of community and hospitality that characterises the Costa del Sol. The excellent coordination work that allowed the race to run smoothly deserves mention, with the involvement of the municipalities of Casares, Gaucín, Cortes de la Frontera, Jimera de Líbar, Benadalid, Algatocín, Genalguacil and, of course, Estepona.
Likewise, the collaboration of the Guardia Civil Traffic unit, Civil Protection, Local Police forces and numerous volunteers has been essential; their joint work has ensured the safety and smooth running of the event along the entire route.

On the sporting side, the fastest on the timed stage up to Peñas Blancas were Pedro García Fernández, Luis Ángel Maté and Fernando Romera. In the women’s category, María García de la Cruz, Rebeca Bernal and Rocío García de Veas stood out.
